Father, help us to look after Your world.
Climate change is nothing new. We were taught about the last Ice Age in our geography classes at school and whether the theories are correct or not web don't know, but the Bible has quite a few recorded ones as well.
The Garden of Eden was recorded as warm and watered by morning mist rather than rain (Gen 2:6), with cool mornings and evenings (v8). We don't know how long this state of affairs lasted, but the first major climate change was during the time of Noah. My personal theory was that the area of land separated from the water, as recorded in Genesis 1:9,10, was broken up. This resulted in a change of sea currents and wind patterns, with the Mediterranean Sea being formed. The proximity to this body of water resulted in rain falling in this area for the first time. The flood was a result of falling rain, rising tides and the tsunami caused by plate tectonics.
Another instance of climate change may have been at the time of Joseph. We know Egypt was a prosperous nation which relied on the River Nile for it's irrigation. This meant it was less susceptible to famine than most nations around it, yet for seven years this is what happened. There's a few things that can cause famine, but lack of rainfall is the most common. While the river was used to water the crops, if it dropped significantly then it would not be high enough to enter the irrigation channels and therefore only water which could be carried from the river would be available. This would reduce the amount of agricultural land to next to nothing.
A similar famine, which is attributed to climate change, was during the time of Elijah. 1 Kings 17 and 18 records the story. For three years there was no rain.
Major climactic events are also mentioned for the 'last days'. Revelation 16 mentions excessive heat and even the River Euphrates drying up. But it's not just about heat and lack of water because in verse 21 we have these words
"And great hailstones, about one hundred pounds each, fell from heaven on people; and they cursed God for the plague of the hail, because the plague was so severe."
While God has 'set a season for everything' He can still command them if He wants. The problems in the world are all man-made, but He has promised to put everything right. He will "destroy the destroyers of the earth" (Revelation 11:18) But first it requires an important; the return of His Son, Jesus Christ.
God created the world to show His glory and power, not for people to abuse it. He has appointed a time when it will be restored. Not some fictional going to heaven, but a perfect creation here on earth.
